ASTM A312 covers seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Every ASTM A312 stainless steel pipe order comes down to four numbers: nominal pipe size, outside diameter, schedule and wall thickness. This guide explains how those dimensions work, then walks through grades, specifications, applications and buying checks. The formal designation is ASTM A312, while “A312 pipe” is common industry shorthand for pipe manufactured to this specification.
What Is ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe?
ASTM A312 pipes cover NPS 1/8 to 30 and fall under one product standard that fixes chemistry, heat treatment, testing and tolerances. That standard answers the ASTM A312 meaning question: a material specification for austenitic stainless pipe, not a size chart. Seamless pipe has no weld seam. Welded pipe starts as strip, takes an automatic longitudinal weld without filler metal, then gets heat treated. Heavily cold-worked pipe undergoes substantial cold reduction after forming, followed by the heat treatment required by the applicable ASTM A312 product requirements. Grades include 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321 and 347. Grades 304 and 316 serve general service, while the L grades cut carbon to 0.035% for welded fabrication.
ASTM A312 Pipe Dimensions and Sizes
Nominal pipe size (NPS) names the pipe, and outside diameter (OD) gives its true measurement. NPS 2 pipe measures 60.3 mm across the outside. OD stays fixed for each NPS whatever the schedule, so a thicker wall cuts into the inside diameter (ID) instead. ID equals OD minus twice the wall thickness. Mills supply random lengths or cut lengths to order, so confirm the length you need at enquiry.
| NPS | DN | OD (mm) | OD (inch) |
| 1/2 | 15 | 21.3 | 0.840 |
| 1 | 25 | 33.4 | 1.315 |
| 2 | 50 | 60.3 | 2.375 |
| 4 | 100 | 114.3 | 4.500 |
| 6 | 150 | 168.3 | 6.625 |
| 8 | 200 | 219.1 | 8.625 |
| 12 | 300 | 323.9 | 12.750 |
ASTM A312 Pipe Schedule and Wall Thickness
A schedule is a number code that ties wall thickness to pipe size. Stainless pipe uses the S-suffix series from ASME B36.19M, and the common schedules are 10S, 40S and 80S. Take NPS 4: the 10S wall measures 3.05 mm, 40S measures 6.02 mm and 80S measures 8.56 mm. NPS 2 follows the same pattern: the wall grows from 2.77 mm at 10S to 5.54 mm at 80S, which doubles the metal and trims the bore from 54.8 mm to 49.2 mm. Heavier schedules raise pressure capacity and weight while shrinking the bore, which cuts flow area and raises pressure drop. Pick the schedule from design pressure, design temperature, corrosion allowance and the wall thickness your piping code calculates. When two schedules both satisfy the calculation, the lighter one saves cost and weight.
ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions Chart
The chart below lists OD, wall thickness and approximate ID in millimetres for five common sizes across 10S, 40S and 80S. The ASME B36.10M and ASME B36.19M steel pipe dimensions chart lists every other size and schedule.

ASTM A312 Specification and Standard
The ASTM A312 specification sets rules in six areas. Material requirements cover the austenitic grade list. Chemistry limits differ by grade: 304 allows up to 0.08% carbon, while 304L allows 0.035%. Mechanical properties set minimum strength, with 515 MPa tensile and 205 MPa yield for 304, and 485 MPa and 170 MPa for 304L. Heat treatment requirements vary by grade and product condition and must meet the applicable ASTM A312 requirements. Testing covers tension tests, flattening tests on welded pipe, and either a hydrostatic or non-destructive electric test on each length. Dimensional rules let wall thickness run up to 12.5% under nominal. ASME B36.19M supplies the nominal sizes and schedule thicknesses that the ASTM A312 standard references, so the two documents work as a pair.
Common ASTM A312 Pipe Applications
ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe is widely utilized in process industries for its reliable corrosion resistance and high temperature strength. The grade is selected based on the working temperature, fluid chemistry and surface finish requirements.
- Chemical Processing Unit: 316L Tube for Strong Acids and Chloride Containing Streams.
- Oil, Gas and Petrochemical: 321 and 347 are specified for service lines at 425°C to avoid intergranular corrosion.
- Power generation: High-carbon 304H and 347H headers for improved long-term creep strength.
- Food & Pharmaceuticals: 316L with a polished inner bore for clean, smooth, hygienic surfaces.
- Water and General Process Lines: Uses 304 and 304L for economical performance in moderate conditions.
- Heavy Industry Facilities: It is utilized in fertilizer plants, pulp and paper mills and in saltwater desalination systems with A312 pipe.
What to Consider When Buying ASTM A312 Pipes
First, examine the grade because the corrosive environment determines whether 304L, 316L, or 321. Next, check the NPS and dimensions. Then, fit the schedule and wall thickness to the datasheet pressure and temperature. Choose between a seamless or welded structure. Always review the ASME B31.3 construction and weld evaluation standards before purchasing ASTM A312 seamless or welded pipe. Construction and examination criteria determine the design quality factor for wall thickness estimates. Finally, confirm the supplier’s grade range, stock and lead time before placing the order. At Zhejiang Xintongda Special Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd., we manufacture and supply ASTM A312 stainless steel seamless pipes in grades including 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 347, 904L and 254 SMO. We can help buyers review NPS, schedule, wall thickness, testing and material requirements before selecting the appropriate pipe for their application.
