ASTM A312 Thick Walled Stainless Steel Pipe Manufacturer
We at Xintongda Special Steel (XTD) are an ISO-certified manufacturer of high-quality thick-walled stainless steel pipes. These are heavy-duty stainless steel pipes with an increased wall thickness. We make our thick-walled SS pipes in accordance with ASTM, EN, JIS, GB, and GOST standards. This pipe has good strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. Because of these properties, it can withstand elevated temperatures, high pressure, and harsh environments very well. Its thickness ranges from 5 to 65 mm and comes in Schedule 80. We also offer customised solutions for diameters, thicknesses, and surface finishes. Some of the most common SS grades we offer for these pipes are 304 and 316.
At XTD, we have been producing high-quality SS thick-walled pipes since 1985 and have an annual supply capacity of 25,000 tons. We can deliver in-stock products within 7 days and production orders in 15-60 days. Our company also holds multiple international certifications.

What are Stainless Steel Thick-Wall Pipes?
Thick-wall stainless steel pipes are heavy-duty tubular products made from austenitic stainless steel alloy with increased wall thickness. Due to the thickness, this SS pipe can easily handle high-pressure applications. It has high corrosion resistance, better strength and pressure handling capacity, and a smooth internal and external surface. The SS thick-wall pipe is mainly used in oil & gas, chemical processing, marine, power generation, and various other industries. As already mentioned, the wall thickness of a SS thick-wall pipe typically ranges from 5 to 65 mm, which helps it handle high-pressure fluid flow. We classify our thick-wall SS pipes according to Schedule 80S, 160, or even thicker.
SS Heavy Wall Thickness Seamless Pipe Production Process
The manufacturing process of our Stainless Heavy Wall Seamless Pipe starts by heating a high-quality SS solid billet and piercing it to form a hollow shell. Then, to get the heavy wall thickness, the shell undergoes hot extrusion. The next step is cold drawing to improve its dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Later, we perform solution annealing to restore the pipe’s mechanical properties. At the end, we perform pickling and straightening, after which the pipe is sent for testing. Key Characteristics & Advantages of Heavy Wall Stainless Steel Pipe in High-Pressure Environments
Here are 5 features and benefits of heavy-wall stainless steel pipe that make it suitable for various applications:
- Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: The high chromium content of the SS thick-wall pipe forms a passive chromium oxide layer when exposed to oxygen, which helps prevent oxidation. Also, many grades like 304 and 316 have nickel, and grades like 316 additionally contain molybdenum, which improve general and localised corrosion resistance (pitting, crevice, etc).
- Longevity in Harsh Conditions: The thick walls of this pipe slow down material degradation. And since our pipe is seamless, it can stay stable under corrosive or cyclic stress conditions.
- Superior Strength and Durability: Thick-wall SS pipe gets its strength and durability from the wall thickness (helps withstand mechanical loads), its seamless nature (maintains uniform grain structure and stress distribution), and the alloy’s high tensile and yield strength.
- Low Maintenance: The seamless pipe has a smooth internal and external finish, which reduces scaling, buildup, and flow obstruction, and its structural hardness reduces repairs caused by cracking, leakage, or deformation.
- Extreme Pressure & Temperature Resilience: This pipe has increased pressure-bearing capacity and good mechanical strength at both high and low temperatures. This makes the pipe provide good pressure and temperature resilience.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the difference between thick-walled and thin-walled stainless steel pipes? The difference between thick-walled and thin-walled stainless steel pipes is that the thick-walled pipes have more wall thickness, which helps provide higher resistance to pressure, temperature, and impact. Thin-walled pipes have comparatively thinner wall thickness, which is why these are lightweight and not suitable for heavy-duty applications, unlike thick-walled pipes.
-
What is the wall thickness of a thick-wall stainless steel pipe? The wall thickness of a thick-wall stainless steel pipe depends on the schedule you choose, but it typically ranges from 5-65 mm.
-
What is the difference between Schedule 80 and Schedule 160 pipes? The main difference between schedule 80 and 160 pipes is that the walls of 160 are thicker than 80, which makes Sch 160 stronger for very high-pressure/ temperature applications.
-
How do you calculate the wall thickness of a stainless steel pipe?To calculate the wall thickness of a stainless steel pipe, apply the following formula: t = (PD)/2(SE+PY). Here, t - minimum required wall thickness, P - Internal Design Pressure (MPa), D - Outside Diameter (mm), S - Allowable Stress (from material specs), E - Weld Joint Efficiency (1.0 for seamless, <1.0 for welded), and Y - coefficient that accounts for material behaviour at elevated temperatures.
-
How is a thick-wall pipe different from a standard pipe?A thick-wall pipe has more wall thickness than a standard pipe, which means you get a smaller inner diameter for the same outer diameter. This makes the pipe stronger and more durable.
-
What are the differences between Seamless and Welded Thick-Walled Stainless Steel Pipes?A seamless thick-wall pipe is manufactured by piercing a solid billet without a weld seam, which provides the pipe with uniform corrosion resistance and better strength. A welded thick-walled SS pipe is made by welding sheet plates into a pipe, which makes it very cost-efficient, but it can have a potential weak spot.
