ASTM A312 Stainless Steel 317 Seamless Pipe Manufacturer in China

We, Zhejiang Xintongda Special Steel (XTD), are a leading manufacturer and global supplier of 317 stainless steel seamless pipe. ASTM A312 TP317 is a high-quality, austenitic stainless steel pipe that is very resistant to corrosion, especially when it comes to sulfurous media, chlorides and halides. This molybdenum-bearing SMLS pipe has excellent strength and enhanced pitting resistance. This makes it a preferred choice over standard 304/316 grades. We manufacture this pipe in compliance with the ASTM A312, EN, JIS, and GB standards. Its defining characteristic is a higher molybdenum content (3.0–4.0%) compared to SS 316, which gives it significantly better resistance to localized corrosion, especially in acidic environments. Due to these qualities, it can be used in the chemical processing, paper and pulp, and petrochemical industries. We are a multiple internationally certified supplier and have a large stock of 317 stainless steel pipes in different sizes. We also make custom pipes to fit the needs of our customers.

Stainless Steel 317 Seamless Pipe

SS 317 Seamless Pipe Manufacturing Process

The SS 317 seamless pipe manufacturing process begins with a solid round billet. The billet is first heated to a high temperature in a furnace, then pierced by a rotary piercer to create a hollow shell. Then the shell is rolled and pulled through a series of dies and mandrels to get its precise final size and wall thickness. This results in a pipe free of any welded seams. Finally, we solution-anneal the pipe at a minimum of 1900°F (1038°C) and quench it rapidly to restore full corrosion resistance. The pipe then undergoes testing and inspection before dispatch.

What are the Key Features of 317 Stainless Steel Pipe?

The 317 SS pipe has 5 characteristics that make it useful in demanding applications. These include high corrosion resistance, superior pitting resistance, higher creep & tensile strength, excellent weldability and fabrication, and high mechanical strength and toughness.

  • High Corrosion Resistance: 317 SS pipe offers exceptional resistance to many corrosive media, including sulfuric, acetic, and formic acids. This is due to its high chromium (18.00-20.00%) and nickel (11.00-15.00%) content. This forms a stable passive layer on the surface.
  • Superior Pitting Resistance: The pipe is very resistant to pitting corrosion especially in places where chloride is present. This is because of the significantly higher molybdenum content (3.0% to 4.0%) compared to standard 316 stainless steel.
  • Higher Creep & Tensile Strength: Even at high temperatures 317 SS seamless pipe retains its excellent mechanical properties. The combination of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum provides improved resistance to creep and high tensile strength.
  • Excellent Weldability and Fabrication: The SMLS Pipe can be easily welded using standard fusion methods, and it is easy to shape. Its low-carbon version, 317L, further reduces the risk of sensitisation during welding. This ensures structural integrity.
  • High Mechanical Strength and Toughness: The pipe is very strong and can absorb a significant amount of energy before breaking. This toughness, maintained even at very low temperatures, is a property of the alloy's austenitic crystal structure.

Inox 317 seamless pipe is used majorly in the following 6 industrial applications:

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry

Oil and Gas Industry

Power Generation

Desalination Plants

Food and Beverage Industry

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industry

Chemical Processing

Chemical and Petrochemical Industry

We supply stainless steel 317 pipe for piping systems that handle strong acids, chlorides, and corrosive chemicals. Its superior pitting resistance makes it highly suitable for vessels and heat exchangers in these harsh environments.
Oil and Gas Industry

Oil and Gas Industry

Offshore drilling platforms and refineries use the pipe for process piping and tubing. It resists the corrosive effects of seawater and mildly sour environments found in oil and gas extraction.
Power Generation

Power Generation

This pipe is used in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers and condenser tubing in coal-fired power plants. The high molybdenum content effectively resists the aggressive sulfuric acid condensation.
Desalination Plants

Desalination Plants

TP317 pipe is used for piping and parts that move very corrosive saltwater and brine. The improved resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking ensures that these facilities will operate reliably for an extended service life.
Food and Beverage Industry

Food and Beverage Industry

The pipe is used in storage tanks, fermentation vats, and liquid processing lines. Its clean finish and high corrosion resistance prevent product contamination and stand up to cleaning chemicals.
Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industry

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industry

This 317 pipe is applied in reactors and sterile fluid transfer lines where high purity and resistance to aggressive media are critical. It can handle sterilization and keep pharmaceutical products from getting contaminated.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between SS 317 and SS 317L pipe?
The difference between SS 317 and SS 317L pipe is that SS 317 pipe has more carbon (0.08 max) than the SS 317L pipe (0.035 max). Higher carbon in SS 317 improves strength and hardness but increases the risk of sensitisation during welding. This can cause intergranular corrosion.
  • What is the maximum operating temperature for SS 317 seamless pipe?
SS 317 seamless pipe can handle temperatures up to 1600°F (871°C) for intermittent use and 1700°F (927°C) for continuous service.
  • Why should I choose SS 317 over SS 316 pipe?
SS 317 has more molybdenum (3.0–4.0%) than SS 316 (2.0–3.0%). This gives it better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. We recommend SS 317 for harsh environments with chlorides, sulfuric acid, or sulfurous media where SS 316 may fail.
