ASTM A312 SMO 254 Seamless Pipe Manufacturer in China
We at Zhejiang Xintongda Special Steel (XTD) are an experienced manufacturer in China of SMO 254 seamless pipes. 254 SMO seamless pipe is a premium austenitic stainless steel pipe. It is commonly referred to as 6 Moly Pipe because of its high molybdenum content (around 6%), combined with additional chromium (19.5-20.5%) and nitrogen (0.18-0.22%). This chemistry gives the alloy exceptional resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. It has higher strength and better brackish water resistance than the standard 304 or 316 grades. The 6MO pipe also has high strength and high ductility and can remain stable up to 400-600 °C (for non-continuous service). We manufacture the SMO 254 pipes in accordance with ASTM A312, EN, JIS, and GB standards, and our pipes are used in marine, chemical and oil & gas industries. With 4 decades of experience and multiple international certifications, we have an annual supply capacity of 25,000 tons.

Manufacturing Process of SMO 254 Seamless Pipe
We heat high-quality stainless steel billets to manufacture SMO 254 piping. Then we pierce them to make a hollow shell. After that, the shells are hot-worked and cold-drawn/cold-rolled to get the right size. Then the pipes undergo solution annealing, pickling, straightening, and rigorous testing to ensure corrosion resistance and structural integrity. You can visit this page for a full description of the manufacturing process.
Characteristics of Stainless Steel SMO 254 Seamless Pipes
The 5 main characteristics of SMO 254 seamless pipe are excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, high resistance to general corrosion, high temperature performance, higher strength, and good weldability.
- Excellent Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Corrosion: This is due to the high levels of molybdenum and nitrogen that create a passive stable layer, which prevents pitting and crevice corrosion.
- High Resistance to General Corrosion: The 254SMO offers resistance to general corrosion (strong acids and chemicals) because of its super austenitic structure.
- High-Temperature Performance: The high amounts of molybdenum, chromium, and nitrogen help the SMO 254 pipe stay stable at high temperatures (up to 600 °C).
- Higher Strength than Conventional Austenitic Stainless Steels: The nitrogen present in this alloy strengthens it and increases its yield and tensile strength.
- Good Weldability: The low carbon content of this alloy improves the SMO 254 pipe’s weldability and prevents carbide precipitation during welding.
SMO 254 Pipes Equivalent Grades
The standard equivalent designation for 254 SMO stainless steel pipe is UNS S31254. Apart from this, different standards and specifications around the world recognise this grade. For example, the European Designation is 1.4547.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is 6MO stainless steel pipe?6MO stainless steel pipe is a high-alloy super austenitic steel pipe consisting of molybdenum (around 6%), chromium, and nitrogen. It gets its name from the high amount of molybdenum. It is one of the grades of the austenitic stainless steel pipes.
-
How does 254 SMO pipe compare to other stainless steel alloys?254 SMO pipe compares to other stainless steel alloys by providing better resistance to general and crevice corrosion, and significantly higher yield strength.
-
Is 254 SMO pipe available in both seamless and welded forms?Yes, 254 SMO pipe is available in both seamless and welded forms. However, we at XTD specialise in manufacturing high-quality seamless 254SMO pipes only.
-
What temperature range can 254 SMO pipe safely handle?SMO 254 seamless pipe can safely handle temperatures from -196°C to approximately 300°C (-320°F to 572°F) for continuous service. For non-continuous or intermittent service, it can withstand temperatures up to 400–600°C (752–1112°F).
